Meeting with Valentin Abad

Valentin Abad

We love discovering artwork in the studios of our favorite artists. One of them is Valentin Abad, a featured artist in our seasonal campaign. We met the artist in his studio in Montreuil, where he focuses on sculpture and his love for raw materials.

Born in Paris to a photographer father and a textile designer mother, Valentin grew up with a sensitivity to the world of art, which he studied before becoming a photographer.

When did you start?

When my first son was born, I felt a real need to create my
own works. I set up in my garage and started sculpting and creating installations. It’s been almost six years now, and everything changed last year when I won the Young Creation award. Things quickly fell into place after that, with exhibitions and numerous projects, including this fantastic collaboration with Le Tanneur.

What sets you apart as an artist?

I try to materialize the intangible, things that are difficult to interpret, particularly emotions. I enjoy giving them form, bringing them to life through works that express these feelings. Humanity and imperfection are central to my thinking. I like it when forms have rough edges
and provoke thought.

Why wood?

I started with wood because it’s a noble and beautiful material with a lovely texture. I’ve always been a handyman, and with this material, the result is raw and immediate. No baking, no welding — you can easily work with it and achieve a result with great sensitivity.

What connections do you see with leather goods?

It’s all about shaping the material. In sculpture, as in leatherwork, you start with a beautiful but raw element and shape it into the desired result. The comparison ends at the finishing stage: where I work with the imperfect and uneven, leatherwork goes much further.

What did you like about this collaboration?

I really appreciated the total creative freedom I was given, the blank canvas. In this collaboration, you can feel the House’s deep respect for the artist's work, and it was a real pleasure to work this way.

Can you tell us about these steles?

It’s above all a lot of research. We had to find the right balance in the dimensions. Then there’s the notion of asymmetrical balance, which is interesting—those imperfect teeth sculpted diagonally. Some steles are symmetrical, but I had even more fun with the asymmetrical forms. They lead the eye elsewhere and open up new possibilities.

What would you like to explore next as an artist?

Stone. I love stone. I’ve started experimenting with marble in my studio—it’s like stepping into traditional sculpture. The idea now is to incorporate my approach. I need to work on massive pieces; there's a form of letting go, and I love that kind of challenge.

Visit our stores from March 23 to May 24, 2022, to admire the works.

On this occasion, participate in our contest online or in-store for a chance to win one of the 32 pieces available. Each of these pieces is part of this exclusive Le Tanneur x Valentin Abad series.
